Our Community Promise
The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of La Romaine, QC, are a testament to our commitment.
La Romaine is found near the Olomane River and consists of a small French-speaking population and a larger community called Unamen Shipu. The name of the Olomane River comes from the Innu word “olomane” or “oromane”, which means red ochre, for the reddish waters of the river. The citizens who live in the community traditionally maintained a nomadic lifestyle. At the end of summer, they left the coast and travelled upriver to hunt and fish in winter.
The majority of La Romaine’s 977 residents (according to the 2016 Statistics Canada Census) are First Nations, and they predominantly speak French, Montagnais (Innu), and English. Many of them work in the lobster fishing industry.
The nearest major city is Quebec City, 1,104.6 km away. La Romaine is only accessible by plane through the La Romaine Airport, or by boat throughout the year. During winter, it can be accessed by snowmobile using the Route Blanche (White Trail). Route Blanche shows when the lakes, rivers, and sea ice freezes and a thick layer of snow covers the entire landscape, revealing a beautiful land connection between all surrounding communities.
