Our Community Promise
The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of Fort Severn First Nation, ON, are a testament to our commitment.
Located just eight kilometers off the coast of Hudson Bay, Fort Severn First Nation (Fort Severn) is the most northern community in Ontario. As a Western Swampy Cree First Nation that is also known as the Wasaho Cree Nation, Fort Severn’s residents have a strong identity grounded in upholding their cultural autonomy, intellectual sovereignty and heritage. Many of Fort Severn’s 361 residents (according to Statistics Canada’s 2016 Census) view language as the root of identity, and speak Cree as a first language in a conscious decision to promote their Indigenous identity.
Fort Severn is located between Peawanuck, ON, 178 km to the east, and Shamattawa, MB, 278 km to the west. The First Nation is accessible through winter road and through air via twice-weekly flights directly from Toronto.
