Located 935 km northwest of Winnipeg on the banks of the nearby Reindeer Lake, Brochet is a community home to 383 residents (according to Statistics Canada’s 2016 Census). With many of its community members being citizens of Barren Lands First Nation, many embrace a lifestyle of commercial fishing and trapping which are prominent industries in the region. Some notable economic development initiatives in Brochet include its ongoing construction projects and the development of fuel sites.
Brochet is also known as Kisipakamak, Cree for “the end of the bay”, emphasizing the widespread richness of the surrounding greenery and wildlife, along with its identity as a town on the frontier of Manitoba, nearing the border of Saskatchewan. Today, Brochet is accessible by winter road and its airport, servicing daily flights from Thompson, Winnipeg, Lac Brochet and Tadoule Lake. Notable languages spoken in the region include Cree, Chipewyan and English.

Brochet Northern Store Manager-in-relief, Mark Turner, and his team are significant community supporters. The staff is eager to finish the development of their new storefront and to continue serving the community to their fullest capacity.

“Our staff and customers are really anticipating the construction of the new store this coming summer,” says Turner. “We’re eager to have more tools and resources to help Brochet out in any way we can, especially after seeing how everyone worked together during the height of the pandemic.”
