Our Community Promise
The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of Salluit, QC, are a testament to our commitment.
Salluit stands at the centre of Nunavik’s 14 communities, making it an ideal meeting spot for the people of the Hudson and Ungava coasts. Following decades of dedicated service towards developing the area since the early 1900's, the township was officially recognized in 1979. To this day, the Sallumiut's traditions and culture remain an inseparable part of the community's identity as a place founded on perseverance and commitment.
Today, the township is solely accessible by plane through daily flights at Salluit Airport connecting its 1,241 residents (according to the Makivik Corporation website) to Montreal, 1,854 km away. Incoming flights are greeted with the sight of flush wildlife, prime for the harvesting of fresh clams, arctic char, caribou, berries and herbs. Languages spoken in the region include Inuktitut, French and English.

Salluit’s Northern Store Manager, Tyler Wilson, and his team are significant community supporters.
“Salluit is a wonderful community that is warm and welcoming,” says Wilson. “My wife and I have had the pleasure of living here for the last two and a half years, and getting to know everyone has been one of the greatest opportunities I’ve ever been given. There is a real sense of community here and when you are down or need help, there is always somebody who is there for you. During the pandemic, everyone in town did their part to keep our case count at one of the lowest in the country, and we are now starting to see the results of everybody’s hard work as restrictions are beginning to be lifted.”
Wilson continues, “Our community appreciates consistency above all else, and ensuring we have a deep pool of employees who are themselves Sallumiut helps us provide the best service experience possible. Our staff work very hard to take care of our community, and have tons of pride for the service they provide. We are proud to serve such a great community!”
