Youth from Kuujjuaq, QC, are slated to receive brand-new hockey equipment for next season, with the assistance of a Greener Tomorrow grant.
The Kuujjuaq Hockey Club is a community-run organization serving to create opportunities for children to get into the sport, while also involving them with a number of different environmental programs – one of the Club’s key initiatives being its ongoing efforts to recycle pop cans. This is done in collaboration with the city’s municipality, which organizes occasional clean-up days.

On May 17, the Club shipped 120 bags of empty pop cans to recycling centres in Montreal, significantly cleaning up the community while also gaining some funding to be put towards its other needs. Aside from the Club’s dedicated members and coaches going door-to-door and to deposit points in the village to collect the cans, Kuujjuaq residents have also gotten involved by saving their empty cans for the Club.

The Greener Tomorrow grant, worth $5,999, will be put towards the purchase of jerseys and goalie equipment for all age groups, while also being used to suit up everyone aged 12 and under with full protective gear.
“It’s heartening to think about how we can help the Club in their upcoming season,” says Kuujjuaq Northern store Manager Kate Carter. “They do a lot to keep the community clean, and we’re happy to help them in this way.”
