Fort Simpson, the only village within the Northwest Territories, is located 500 kilometers west of Yellowknife, right at the confluence of the Mackenzie and Liard rivers and is accessible by air, boat and winter road. The village’s 1,202 residents (as per 2016 Census Canada data) speak South Slavery and English, and include 770 First Nations, 95 Métis and 20 Inuit peoples.

1. Employment: We are one of the most prominent employers in Fort Simpson, with our Northern store employing 31 individuals. Our commitment to local talent is demonstrated through our workforce consisting of 16% Indigenous employees.*  

2. Capital Investment: Northern has made a $1,544,051 capital investment in the Fort Simpson store over a 10-year period.*

3. Annual Economic Impact: Northern is making a positive impact in Fort Simpson, with $1,768,196 annual economic impact in the community.*

“Supporting the community is very important. Any time a donation request is received, preference is always given to initiatives that support youth and elders,” said Evoy. “One example of our support was the donation that was made to the local school containing food and snacks from our new line of product called School Safe.”
