The community of Pikangikum recently got a new beautiful sign upgrade for their community arena – a popular gathering spot that often brings people of all ages together.
The Pikangikum First Nation Arena is a central location for playing and watching hockey games and tournaments, making hockey an integral aspect of the community’s identity.
When the Pikangikum Education Authority reached out to the local Northern store with a request for funding an upgrade for the First Nation Arena’s sign, the store was more than willing to contribute and donated $2,500. This contribution was met with appreciation from the Education Authority.
The Northern store also actively supports and sponsors the community’s hockey tournaments every year. The arena itself was donated to the community by The North West Company Inc. several years ago.
“The community and kids who play hockey were so happy, and the donation we gave supported and helped the community in a big way. Hockey is a big thing in the community with 4 to 5 tournaments every year! A few from outside the community also come to participate in the tournaments,” shared Pikangikum Northern Store Manager, Sivakumar Sekar.
