The Nunavut News Weekly Photo Contest has received much interest and excitement from community members since its launch, and positive feedback has been an encouraging sign that people are doing what they can to stay healthy and happy at home.
Furthermore, the Weekly Photo Contest run by Nunavut News has proven so popular – and effective in helping remind people to stay home, social distance and help “plank the curve” – that it has now expanded it into the Northwest Territories.
Nunavut News’ parent , NNSL Media, began the new version of the contest on its Facebook page on May 21. The new campaign will also be sponsored by The North West Company, awarding weekly winners with $150 gift cards redeemable at a Northern or NorthMart store.
The contest asks readers to share photos to Nunavut News’ Facebook page of their creative ideas for “Planking the Curve” of COVID-19, showing how they remain hopeful while coping with social distancing and an indoor life like no other.
Here are some of the contest’s recent winners in Nunavut:
Pictured above (Left) Skye, 7, washing her hands to the tune of the Happy Birthday song. Her father Russell Mila Kamingoak Akeeagok was the second-week #PlankTheCurve contest winner. (Right) Third-week contest winner, Coral Harbour's Charmaine Eetuk with her beautiful self-made amauti made out of plastic bags.
The contest has been highly successful and has not only helped people remember to plank the curve and curb the spread of COVID-19, but has also kept community members entertained and busy for the duration of the lockdown period. The joint efforts of the several communities in Nunavut have allowed the territory to remain free from any cases of COVID-19.
In trying times such as these, minor individual efforts can make significant impacts and help us in the fight against COVID-19.
More information about the contests can be found at Nunavut News’ and NNSL’s Facebook pages respectively.
