The Northern Store in Umiujaq, QC supported the local school’s scrabble tournament by donating Northern gift cards for the winners – in turn helping promote literacy and make books more accessible in the community.
The scrabble tournament was one of the many activities planned to raise money for the Scholastic book fair at Kiluutaq School.
The book fair allows community members to share the love of reading and gives everybody an access to reading and purchasing many books. Part of the profit made from the book fair is given back to the school to buy books for their classroom libraries.
Some other activities planned to raise money for the book fair included a book exchange, book making contest/book exhibition, storytelling and literacy activities in the gym for the whole school.
Kiluutaq School principal Mathew Bryan and all the contestants had a great time at the scrabble tournament and they were happy about the gift cards donation from the Northern store.
“It was a great idea; all the winners loved the gift cards. We surpassed our goal for the book fair and each class was able to purchase a few items for their class,” said Bryan
