The Municipality of Kimmirut, which is leading the way in Nunavut for cleaning the community and water systems, will be featured in a water waste symposium this fall.
Greener Tomorrow is helping Kimmirut keep the community clean. Kimmirut Northern store manager Sheryl Carruthers was happy to present a $6,551 Greener Tomorrow grant cheque to Mayor Ningeolaa Killiktee earlier this year.
“The consistent, large collection of money could only be accomplished by someone as organized as the Northern Stores,” said Kimmirut Northern store manager Sheryl Carruthers.
The Greener Tomorrow program aims to reduce plastic bag consumption, by applying a small fee for each non-reusable bag purchased. The accumulated funds were then invested right back into the community of Kimmirut. The Northern store also donated two reusable shopping bags to each Kimmirut home when the program first began.
One hundred per cent of the money collected goes right back into the community. The funds generated by the program will go towards organizing and running the annual community clean up, and event that includes a barbeque and prizes.
